Starting Up.

Species : Field Maple.
Origin : My Brother in Law's garden waste sack
Collected: Jun 2008.
Cost : Nothing.

History : I happened to be visiting my Brother in Law one sunny afternoon in June 2008 only to discover to my horror that he had decided ( without telling me ) to tear up a hedge of Field Maples he had planted circa 14 years ago. By the time I got to him he had already disposed of the majority of the hedge, and what was left in his garden waste sack had been there bare root for almost a week. I managed to salvage 5 “ stumps “ shall we say with some evidence once of a fibrous root. I potted them up asap into multi purpose and to my amazement they started to flourish. I repotted them up after checking the root system in January 2009 into 100% Akadama. This year I commenced some initial styling and carving and focussed on the health of the tree.

This Field Maple is another of the 5 I rescued for no cost in June 2008. I had a very early vision that it would be the strength of the trunk that would be the real point of focus with a dense foliar canopy to frame it. A Parkland Image if you like.

As with the other Field Maples i rescued my first priority was to establish some health into it's root system. So 2009 was spent just feeding feeding feeding. The output of this intense feeding needless to say was masses of new random growth and massive leaves. I wasn't bothered about this over vigour shall we call it, in fact i saw it as a bonus giving me plenty of branches to choose from at a later date. Autumn and Winter 2009 was spent selecting a minimum amount of branches and doing some carving to minimize the damage my brother in law had done with his spade and axe when he tore the hedge up.

The early spring result i am exceptionally happy with. I have the overall summer image i was setting out to achieve.
So now I and the tree are ready to embark on another phase.

I am going to totally leaf prune the tree and see if i can induce some smaller leaves with greater ramification.
